22ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE EVANSTON GARDEN WALK!

2011 Garden Walk
Sunday, July 10th, 12 noon - 5:00 p.m. - our 22nd annual visit to seven very special private gardens in Evanston, plus two extraordinary public gardens.

The private gardens included:

  • A spectacular perennial garden with a spectacular collection of unusual trees and woody plants created by the recently retired horticultural writer for the Chicago Botanic Gardens
  • A glorious English garden near the lake, perfectly complimenting the Cotswold architecture of the home.
  • A stunning garden surrounding the historic prairie-style home of a member of one of Chicago's most prominent families.
  • Gardens with wonderful fountains, hardscape, creative container gardens, vegetable beds and much more.
  • and much, much more.

Many of the gardens are lovingly cared for by the homeowners themselves, though professionals may help with planning and design. Wear your walking shoes, but remember that gardens are all over Evanston, so transport is required. (Bikes are good!) Attendees will receive a map of garden locations and a booklet describing the gardens.

Earth Day Contest Winners

Keep Evanston Beautiful, Inc, and The Evanston Roundtable
present the 22nd Annual Earth Day Contest:

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"

Winners from St. AnathiusWinners from Dewey

All Grades K-5

This year the focus of our contest was on KEB'S roots, "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle." As a community we are working toward a cleaner, litter free environment for all. We asked all entrants to use this theme and show or tells us:

What do you recycle at home and school and what more could you recycle at home or school.

The students may submit a drawing, write an essay (no more than 350 words), create an art project using recycled material (no larger than 11" X 14"), or create a short video(a commercial) on the subject.

Recycling Initiatives

KEB promotes recycling through various efforts including Ricky Recycle (clown Tom Pilurs) who appears at events and rides in the Evanston Fourth of July Parade wearing his costume of jeans and a "boa" made of recycled plastic bottles. More Info

School Garden Initiative

The KEB Green Team encourages environmental awareness by supporting school gardens in all Evanston/Skokie schools. Schools may apply for "seed money" to start or develop their gardening projects. Mini-Grant Application | More Info on the School Garden Initiative

Trashbusters and Adopt-a-Spot

April is Trashbusters month. Organize a team of at least five persons to develop a project for litter pick-up, tree planting, leaf raking, and contact KEB for guidance information and materials. Your efforts to positively impact your neighborhood can take as little as an hour, a day, or continue through the month. Many teams find this endeavor so worthwhile that they Adopt-a-Spot and track their efforts over a year, reporting periodically to KEB. Be sure to contact KEB to participate.

Walter Lucansky Environmental Stewardship Award

Awarded annually to a person who has shown exceptional leadership through personal action or commitment to preservation of natural resources. This award is named after an Evanston citizen who firmly believed "that one man's junk is another man's treasure." More Info
